“How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world.” – Psalm 31:19 (NLT)

The intentions of God towards us are clearly revealed in his word, and they are all favorable. Beginning from Genesis through Revelation, the repleteness of the Lord’s goodness is seen in the lives and accounts of men and women of the Bible.

Although they all lived at different times, their testimonies are seen to bear the same hallmark, suggesting the work of one and the same person – God.

Goodness is consistent with the nature of God. It is one of the fruits of the spirit. “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,” – Galatians 5:22 (NLT)

In Luke 18:18, a young ruler is seen asking Jesus a question. He says this: “…Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” In answering him, Jesus says this: “…none [is] good, save one, [that is], God.” – Luke 18:19 (KJV). In other words, it is only Lord that is good, and every other manifestation of goodness is traceable to him. James 1:17 reads:

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Everyone enjoys the goodness of God. Matthew 5:45 tells us how the Lord allows the sun to shine on the good and evil people alike, and the rain on the just and the unjust.

However, David makes a case for a unique set of people in Psalm 31:19. They are those who fear the Lord. This fear is not your typical dread for something or someone. It is the reverence that only God deserves. This reverence is seen in our attitude towards the Lord and the things of the kingdom.

The fear of Lord has prevented many from compromises while they tarried in the Lord’s presence, and the Lord is aware. The storehouse of the Lord is packed with many good things for those who fear the Lord.

Our text for today tells us how the Lord lavishes his goodness on those who come to him for protection. He provides us with protection and he turns around and blesses us for the same. It is amazing! God appreciates our trust in him.

One can now understand why David said this in Psalms 27:13-14 “Yet I am confident I will see the LORD’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.”

The goodness of the Lord is worth every wait! There are rewards in heaven for us, but the Lord also promised us the experience of his goodness in this life. The faithful one will lavish us with it before the eyes of men.
